Eckington

i just got this from my neighborhood listserve and thought it was fun enought to share. maybe i am wrong...

Eckington is a unique neighborhood in that it straddles both the Northwest and Northeast quadrants of Washington, DC.

North Capitol Street divides NW Eckington from the NE section of the neighborhood. The bulk of Eckington lies in the NE quadrant.

The neighborhood is dominated by Victorian row houses, but there are also a few porch-fronted row houses that were built in the 1920s.

Prices for Eckington homes are all over the map. That's because while some homes have been renovated recently, others are mere "shells," nothing more than four walls and a roof -- and sometimes not even that!

Eckington is east of Ledroit Park and neighboring Howard University. The NW section of Eckington is located just west of North Capitol Street. It is bounded to the south by Florida Avenue and to the north by Rhode Island Avenue.

The neighborhood takes its name from a town in England. The land that now comprises all of Eckington was purchased after the civil war by Joseph Gales, an Englishman who subsequently subdivided the land to develop it as a residential neighborhood. Gales hailed from Eckington, England.
